Late last month, we spent a weekend in Port Angeles researching the west side of the Olympic Peninsula for a new edition of our book, ``Short Trips in the Pacific Northwest.''
It had been a couple of years since our last visit and we found the changes substantial. The most encouraging thing is that the logging-based economy of several years ago has diversified and is reviving with new businesses and new attractions for visitors to Forks, La Push and Port Angeles.
There's a whole new spirit of optimism typified by the sign we saw in the window of a Forks business: ``You can't lose if you don't give up.''
