Few would argue that the quintessential port wine is a well-aged vintage port from a great year. After all, these are the wines on which rests the reputation of Portugal's entire wine industry. This is a big job for a category of wine that represents only about 2 percent of port wine production and an infinitesimal fraction of Portugal's total wine output.
There is, though, another category of port wine that can hold virtually equal esteem among port wine aficionados. The category is tawny port, and it is becoming increasingly popular.
