The House gallery erupted in applause when the chamber unanimously approved $130 million in tax breaks to keep a Lewis County coal mine and power plant humming while improvements are made to reduce pollution around Mount Rainier.
Employees of the Centralia Steam Plant and adjacent coal mine stood and clapped after the 96-0 vote Saturday to send the measure to the Senate, where it is expected to pass also.
Democratic Gov. Gary Locke also supports the proposal.
The bill, which backers said would preserve 670 jobs, offers a package of sales and utility tax breaks to help install $264 million in pollution control scrubbers so the plant can meet ...
