TITLE IX RULING STATE LEADER IN GENDER EQUITY IN SPORTS.(Editorial)(Letter to the Editor)

I commend you for the April 23 editorial ``Title IX ruling is right message,'' recognizing the gains made in gender equity in sports. As you cited, the Supreme Court upheld a lower court ruling that, under Title IX, colleges and universities that receive federal funds must have a roughly equal number of women and men playing sports.

What was not mentioned in your editorial was that Washington leads all states in the proportion of female athletes as compared with the number of female students. In fact, at Washington State University, women make up 47 percent of the school's athletes, identical to the proportion of women in the student body. At the University of Washington, ...
