Five Democratic members of Congress from Washington and Oregon yesterday introduced legislation to include the Hanford Reach of the Columbia River in the national Wild and Scenic River system.
The bill is designed to prod Congress to act on preserving the last undammed stretch between Bonneville Dam and the Canadian border and spawning grounds for the last large natural salmon run left in the river.
``I think there is a very good chance of working out a compromise here by the end of the year,'' said Rep. Norm Dicks, D-Wash., one of the sponsors.
