He was arguably the greatest American of this century, although he never sought elective office and did not receive the position he most wanted, command of Operation Overlord on D-Day. It was his for the asking, but he would not ask for what President Roosevelt was reluctant to grant - permission for George Catlett Marshall to leave his side.
Even this week, with Marshall's name being invoked more than at anytime since his death in 1959, or since he received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1953, he is not really being given his due.
But, then, it is difficult to take the full measure of Marshall, the man who became a cadet here at Virginia Military Institute 100 ...
