It is no accident Seattle Opera is mounting its first Spanish opera next season. (Bizet's ``Carmen'' doesn't count; it's French.)
The production of ``Florencia,'' composed by Daniel Catan of Mexico and based on writings by Gabriel Garcia Marquez of Colombia, is a collaboration with Houston and Los Angeles, cities with large Spanish-speaking populations.
A decade ago, few outside the Latin community cared about Hispanic music, sung or played. Now, it is seemingly omnipresent, coast to coast. While Spanish operas from earlier centuries never got far beyond the Pyrenees, Spanish operetta has fared better and is in the midst of a worldwide revival.
