There was weirdness in the skies over the post-World War II desert around Roswell, N.M., all right, just not the extra-terrestrial sort embraced by legions of UFO fans, according to a U.S. Air Force study released yesterday.

There was no crashed spacecraft, no mangled aliens, the Air Force said in ``The Roswell Report.''

Instead, top secret balloons, plastic research dummies, grisly burn victims and a temporarily deformed captain, mixed with badly faded memories and outright fraud combusted into America's most durable flying saucer story, the study said.
