AIR FORCE OFFICER ACCEPTS OFFER OF GENERAL DISCHARGE.(News)

Air Force Secretary Sheila Widnall yesterday granted a second lieutenant a general discharge from the Air Force as punishment for becoming romantically involved with a former airman - whom he later married - and initially denying their relationship.

Widnall's decision spares the 27-year-old officer, 2nd Lt. William Kite Jr., a court-martial, which would have most likely resulted in a felony conviction. But a general discharge - a lesser discharge than an honorable one - typically makes it more difficult for a former member of the military to find employment and will strip Kite of most benefits.

Perhaps even more important for Widnall, her decision spares the Air Force ...
