Cambodia's Western-educated foreign minister was selected by political leaders yesterday as the country's new titular head of government, putting an urbane face at the head of a power structure born in the violence of a coup last week.
The coup leader, Second Prime Minister Hun Sen, still holds the power in Cambodia after ousting his coalition partner, Prince Norodom Ranariddh.
The quick and unexpected selection of Foreign Minister Ung Huot, 52, to replace Ranariddh as first prime minister was apparently aimed at trying to satisfy international demands for a restoration of some semblance of a democratic government.
