Like him or not, the Dick Gephardt who stood up to challenge President Clinton, Vice President Gore and the direction of the Democratic Party the other day is the real Dick Gephardt.
The House minority leader did not put on a new suit of philosophical clothes to attack the budget deal between the president and Congress and indirectly announce his candidacy for the presidential nomination in 2000. He was doing what came naturally.
For at least the past decade, Gephardt has been squarely in the party's liberal tradition of concern for working families of low and middle income, protection of Social Security and Medicare benefits, opposition to handouts for ...
