The state ferry system mistakenly used improper piping for sprinkler systems in five of its vessels, resulting in seawater corrosion, leakage and eventual replacement costs totaling $766,000.
Washington State Ferries Director Paul Green has called for an investigation to determine the cause of the blunder on the Issaquah-class vessels.
An outside investigator, John Rex of Olympia, has been hired at a maximum cost of $40,000 for up to a month's work, Green said yesterday. Rex began work last Friday.
