It may not be your imagination if you feel the presence of ghosts in Monte Cristo, especially as you hike through the old town site and on to Glacier Basin.
The experience of Monte Cristo began for me more than 20 years ago, driving down a buckling roadway called the Mountain Loop Highway.
Spooky ``Halloween trees'' lined the road. A hungry river gnawed the edges of the asphalt. Rugged peaks rubbed shoulders behind savage clouds. Empty campgrounds were gloomy green dungeons in mist beside a roaring river.
We were not hikers but we knew that Monte Cristo was a ghost town accessible by car. Then we found the road from Barlow Pass to Monte Cristo ...
