The Republic of Congo's president lost his four-month battle to remain in power yesterday after militiamen backed by foreign troops took control of the country's capital and second-largest city.
Soldiers with the Cobra militia of former dictator Gen. Denis Sassou-Nguesso captured the capital, Brazzaville, about noon from forces loyal to President Pascal Lissouba, according to Radio Liberte, Sassou-Nguesso's mouthpiece.
