When Leonardo da Vinci joined the painter's guild in Florence in his late teens, he was already chafing against the confines of the job. Painting was considered a craft, requiring mechanical skills, not mental ones.
For Leonardo, art not only requires thinking, it is thinking. During his lifetime, he came to embody that point of view. Five hundred years later, he still does.
