A shaggy white mountain goat plodded along the shore of Tidal Inlet in Glacier Bay National Park, passing in front of a cottonwood tree containing a big nest with two young bald eagles in residence.
The goat ambled into the water as passengers on the small Spirit of Adventure excursion boat snapped pictures at a furious clip. It was an astounding sight, saltwater being sipped by a beast whose usual habitat is high cliffs and snowfields.
In the wheelhouse, Capt. Jim Johnson mused over his first-ever challenge of maneuvering a tour boat up close to a mountain goat.
