Scientists have recorded one of the few known incidents of a pod of killer whales attacking and killing sperm whales, providing a rare glimpse into the ocean's more brutal side.
The attack confirmed why whalers long ago gave killer whales their names, a group of scientists from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said yesterday. They spoke at the Scripps Nimitz Marine Facility.
``You could actually smell the odor in the air,'' said Lt. Anita Lopez, an operations officer for the David Starr Jordan research ship. ``Later, you could see the blood. It smelled like a fish factory.''
