Every morning, the groan of cargo planes approaching this southern capital city of Sudan reminds residents of who provides their bread and bullets.
Cargo planes disgorge streams of soldiers, sacks of food and crates of ammunition in a town dependent for survival on its airport lifeline to Khartoum, fighting a war with rebels. Warplanes painted in camouflage sit on the tarmac.
``Juba is one big symbol,'' a diplomat said. ``It's a garrison town and to lose it would be a major psychological blow.''
War and drought are ganging up on this verdant town of gentle hills, stone houses and grass huts, a top prize in the radical Muslim government's war ...
