They waited 67 years for this trip to Pasadena and the Washington State Cougars' timing could not have been better. If they had the same record-breaking season next year, they would not be playing No. 1 Michigan in the Rose Bowl.
This 84th Rose Bowl on Jan. 1 marks the end of an era - and not just the era of Cougar frustration.
No longer will there be a binding commitment that future Rose Bowls host the champions of the Big Ten and Pacific 10 conferences.
