Congress has passed a bill calling for a new dollar coin. Legislators finally have given up listening to the U.S. Mint, which was stuck with so many Susan B. Anthony dollars that it never wants to issue a dollar coin again. Assuming President Clinton signs the bill, we will have our one-dollar coin within about two years. It will be the same size as the Suzie, but gold in color and with a distinctive edge.
The bill also calls for 50 different commemorative state designs, five per year, for the reverse side of the quarter. (The front side will keep George Washington.) The reverse side will be a chance for each state to show off. The rules: no head-and-shoulder ...
