The Teamsters union says it plans to launch an organizing effort in the warehouse sector of Washington's apple industry.
Bob Muehlenkamp, organizing director for the Teamsters, said in an interview yesterday the union has received inquiries from some of the 13,000 people who work in warehouses and packing houses.
He said the Teamsters won't attempt to organize field workers. They will be left to the United Farm Workers, which last year won a long effort to represent vineyard workers at Chateau Ste. Michelle winery.
The organizing effort was initially revealed by Teamsters President Ron Carey at the annual AFL-CIO convention in Bal Harbour, Fla.
