For more than six months, the travels of the presidential candidates have been dictated by the geography of the primary season. The circuitous trail has taken them from Iowa to California. From now on, apart from excursions to the nominating conventions (Atlanta for the Democrats, New Orleans for the Republicans), the candidates' itineraries will be governed by an unpopular piece of eighteenth-century political machinery, the Electoral College. It will oblige them to concentrate their efforts in large states and marginal states.
