More than a decade ago, Alice Thornton was visiting from her home in Hawaii during Christmas vacation and saw a rose in bloom.
An active gardener, Thornton saw the rose as a sign that she could find happiness in Edmonds.
Now retired, the former elementary schoolteacher was among the first to sign up for Edmonds' new competitive gardening program, Edmonds in Bloom.
Gardening as a competitive sport?
You bet it is in England, where the Edmonds in Bloom program had its roots. Throughout England, individuals compete with individuals, villages compete with villages, and big cities compete with big cities.
