Seattle Children's Theatre has long catered to deaf children. For the past 14 years, every play produced at the theater has had at least two interpreted performances - one for schools, another for the general public.
But the theater wanted to do more.
With the help of Billy Seago, a deaf actor and teacher, the theater's board put together a format for a deaf outreach program and applied to the U.S. Department of Education for a grant. They were awarded $118,000 for the 1993-94 school year, renewable for two more years if the program was successful.
It's been wildly successful, but that doesn't keep the cash flowing. Funding ends Sept. 30 and so ...
