Stefan Edberg's farewell to Rome is lasting longer than anyone expected.
Showing that a serve-and-volleyer can win on clay, Edberg upset second-seeded Goran Ivanisevic 6-4, 6-2 to reach the Italian Open quarterfinals - the Swede's first victory over a top 10 player in more than a year.
On a day when three of the top four seeds were eliminated, No. 1 Thomas Muster moved closer to his fifth clay-court title of the year by rallying to beat Todd Martin - the last American in the field - 1-6, 6-4, 6-2.
