Tanks guarded the presidential palace and troops surrounded the state-run television center yesterday after the president sacked a popular army chief.
President Abdur Rahman Biswas, who is in charge of the Defense Ministry, announced that he had fired the army chief, Lt. Gen. Abu Saleh Mohammad Nasim, for rebellion and disobedience.
The dismissal heightened tensions in Bangladesh, which has had two presidents assassinated, three military coups and 18 coup attempts since it became independent in 1971.
It also came ahead of nationwide general elections June 12.
