The Bell Harbor International Conference Center doesn't look anything like the baroque Austrian palaces where foreign delegates routinely roll up their sleeves to negotiate international treaties.
Yet the idea was born in Vienna for the bold new facility that now marks Seattle's waterfront at Pier 66 and offers the only simultaneous translation services of its kind on the West Coast.
Bruce Chapman, a former Seattle city councilman who a decade ago was U.S. ambassador to the United Nations in Vienna, was inspired by the Austrian city's appeal as a global gathering place.
