While Bill Clinton and Bob Dole spar over such issues as taxes that affect the nation in the future, the Supreme Court has mandated important changes in our current way of life.
The court, composed of seven members nominated by Republican presidents and two by Democrats, has sharply curtailed single-sex public education by decreeing that the Virginia Military Academy admit women.
It also has thrown out gerrymandered congressional districts in North Carolina and Texas that have provided sure seats for blacks and Hispanics; districts created under the Voting Rights Act of 1965 to give minorities a special shot at winning public office.
