The sound card in our desktop PC died last month. It suddenly let out a high-pitched squawk, and then refused to produce any sound at all. This meant we couldn't use the built-in speaker phone or the audio CD-player, and it left the kids without any of the verbal or musical cues built into their various games.
Thus the loss of the sound card was a pretty big deal. But we didn't panic. No reason to. The computer, a very nice Hewlett-Packard Pavilion, is only 7 months old, so we knew that sound card was covered by the warranty. Hewlett-Packard has a free telephone support service with an 800 number. If the tech reps there can't solve your problem, H-P guarantees it ...
