The most costly aspect of the budget stalemate that has temporarily closed many federal operations and kept workers from their jobs may be that it will further diminish the confidence Americans have in their government.
We have traversed this perilous path before, under different circumstances and different leaders. We have seen cynicism erode the peoples' faith in the cherished institutions bequeathed them by the Founding Fathers.
Each time our belief in the federal system has been restored by wise and dynamic leaders. But cynicism did not disappear.
