A ``dramatic and significant drop'' in infant mortality rates for Seattle and King County shows that some government programs do work, public health officials and elected officials said yesterday.
But work remains to be done, officials said, as some areas have shown little improvement and the infant death rates among African-Americans - though in decline - still are twice as high as for whites.
``Infant mortality is one of the most sensitive indicators . . . of the health and well-being of the community,'' said Dr. Alonzo Plough, director of the Seattle-King County Department of Public Health.
