An unexpected bonanza run may give commercial fishermen in Washington a chance at Fraser River salmon after all, the state Department of Fish and Wildlife said yesterday.

Last month, Canada and Washington said only Indians would have access to the coveted sockeye run.

But the Fraser River run is nearly triple early estimates, and Canada has opened a commercial season.

Washington will decide Friday whether to follow suit.

``If the run continues to get larger, then we may have non-Indian commercial fishing,'' said Dennis Austin, anadromous fish program manager.

Anadromous refers to such fish as salmon that go up river to spawn. ...
