A coastal Douglas fir that began life in the upper Coquitlam watershed an estimated 800 years ago is being exalted as the tallest known tree of its kind in Canada.

``It's really impressive,'' beamed environmentalist Will Koop, who has been waging a five-year crusade to stop logging of old-growth trees in Greater Vancouver regional district watersheds. ``People should be proud of it.''

Officials have been aware of the giant Douglas fir for a couple of years but didn't conduct an official measurement until last week.

Based on the average of two measurements, the Douglas fir is 311 feet tall and 26.6 feet in circumference.
