With the Baltimore Orioles' departure from the playoffs, public salivation for the head of Roberto Alomar has abated. Which makes it a better time to contemplate the consequences of the most debated trial of a sports figure since O.J. Simpson.
Ghastly as Alomar's display of temper was, baseball's collective response was even more egregious: If a player spits, it must acquit. At least until the playoffs are over.
That shouldn't have been too surprising, however. If ever there has been an American organization whose destiny is to make bad situations worse, it is baseball. Had baseball been in charge while Ken Behring attempted to move the Seahawks, the ...
