Officials investigating the crash of TWA Flight 800 said yesterday that no evidence has been found indicating a bomb destroyed the jet, but they have not yet concluded the crash was due to a mechanical malfunction.
The Washington Post reported that extensive metallurgical tests conducted on wreckage suggested that the Trans World Airlines Boeing 747 crashed as a result of a malfunction and not because of an explosive device.
National Transportation Safety Board officials said metal recovered from the wreckage did not reveal that a bomb blew up the jet, but they were not yet ready to make a determination of mechanical malfunction.
