Puget Sound will be home port to half the Navy's Pacific Fleet carrier force for most of 1997, as three of the fleet's six flattops operate from Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and the Everett Naval Station.
The 21-year-old Nimitz, currently nearing the end of a six-month shipyard overhaul, will end a 10-year assignment here Sept. 1 when it leaves Bremerton for a six-month deployment and around-the-world cruise that will terminate in a Virginia shipyard where its two nuclear reactors will be refueled, said Capt. Isaac Richardson III.
Richardson relieved Capt. Al Harms Jr. as commanding officer of the carrier Friday.
