Mariners shortstop Alex Rodriguez yesterday lost the most prestigious award of the postseason by the margin of his uniform number.
In the closest vote since 1960, Texas Rangers right fielder Juan Gonzalez won the American League's Most Valuable Player award by three points over Rodriguez.
Gonzalez had 11 first-place votes and 290 points. Rodriguez received 10 first-place votes and 287 points in balloting by 28 members of the Baseball Writers Association of America.
