The Pacific Northwest economy stands to get a considerable boost from an unlikely source of good fortune. After years of seemingly fruitless negotiations to persuade Japan's government to accept more U.S. wood products into its huge home building market, signs of progress now auger well for the region's wood products producers.
A housing deregulation campaign fueled by efforts to dramatically lower the cost of housing in Japan, together with an aggressive U.S. market promotion effort, may at long last enable U.S. makers of lumber, panel and other manufactured wood products to exploit Japan's enormous market potential.
