Mention Atlantic salmon in, say, Scotland or New Brunswick, and you might hear anglers' fond memories.
Mention the fish in Washington state, and you're liable to get a lecture and perhaps an argument.
``We consider them a pollutant,'' says Arthur Whiteley, a professor emeritus of zoology at the University of Washington.
The species so beloved in the East is frequently despised here by people who fear the imports will harm already weak stocks of Pacific salmon. It is not surprising in a state where the Pacific salmon is held in high esteem and links such different groups as sport fishermen, Indian tribes and commercial fishermen.
