Fate is such that if Stephen Sondheim's first musical, a 1929-set boys-meet-girls-in-Brooklyn tale called Saturday Night, had been staged as originally planned in 1954 (before its producer's untimely death), the then-24-year-old Sondheim might have enjoyed earlier success as a Broadway composer. But can we really accept an alternate universe in which the lyrics-only gigs he reluctantly took for West Side Story and Gypsy--career decisions he hoped would lead to opportunities to write music again--would have gone to someone perhaps less perceptive, intelligent, and witty?
