Maybe it's the disarming twang of his Southern drawl. Or perhaps it's the easy smile, or the stories about lessons learned through hard work on his folks' Idaho farm, where he raised cattle and milked cows.
But people who have worked for him say there's something about Washington State University President V. Lane Rawlins that instills confidence and builds the teams that make big changes possible.
And that's good, because the home of the Cougs is looking to put some polish on a reputation tarnished in recent years with alcohol-fueled riots and frat house fights that featured golf clubs.
