Who's Who in the Freshwater Stream
An ordinary stream bed is home to a wide variety of living organisms. The presence or absence of certain species may be indicative of water quality. Generally, the cleaner the water, the more species can be found, as few species are pollution-tolerant.
Key to Centerfold:
1. Caddisfly - Adults look like their relatives the moths, but fold their wings above the body in a triangular, tent-shaped manner.
2. Crane fly - Resemble overgrown mosquitoes, and have been called "daddy-long-legs with wings." They are quite clumsy fliers, and unlike mosquitoes, do not feed on humans.
