SAN FRANCISCO -- A nonhormonal vaginal moisturizer can ease discomfort from external vaginal dryness in postmenopausal women who can't or won't use an estrogen cream, Dr. Lila E. Nachtigall said in a poster presentation at the annual meeting of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
She randomized 12 women in a nonblinded study to apply either 1 g of a conjugated estrogen cream (Premarin Cream) twice weekly to the internal vaginal area or "a few drops" of a nonprescription, water-based moisturizer (Vagisil Intimate Moisturizer) twice daily to the external vaginal area for 4 weeks.
