Aug. 25--Verizon Wireless Inc., the Bedminster-based cellular phone carrier that took to the airwaves with 25 percent of the fast-growing U.S. market last April, plans to sprinkle some of the wealth.

The company, a joint venture of the former Bell Atlantic Corp. and Britain's Vodafone AirTouch PLC, yesterday filed formal plans to sell $5 billion worth of stock.

The figure was contained in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing and used only to calculate the costs of registering the stock. Some analysts believe the offering could be three times that size, which would easily trump the U.S. record $10.6 billion raised by AT&T Wireless Group in April, ...
