CHARLOTTE, N.C. - A new football season begins Thursday night for Wake Forest and Appalachian State at 7:30 p.m. in Groves Stadium, but the ties to last year are inescapable.
The Deacons, who will start Charlotte sophomore C.J. Leak at quarterback, return only four starters (five if you count the punter) from a team that went 7-5 and beat Arizona State in the Jeep Aloha Bowl last season.
Can the Deacons build on their success or will their relative inexperience force them to regroup?
Appalachian State, meanwhile, went 9-3 a year ago but had its season soured by a first-round upset loss to Florida A&M in the Division I-AA playoffs.
