Tim Henman emerged from the Turkish bath humidity of a breathless afternoon at Flushing Meadows to soak his US Open dream with renewed confidence.
The British No 1 showered the grandstand court in beads of sweat and gathering maturity to dispose of Chilean qualifier Fernando Gonzalez 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 in one hour and 41 minutes.
It was the sort of match the No 11 seed had to win convincingly if he was to further his claims as a serious contender for a grand slam title.
