Notwithstanding the eloquent title and the enthusiastic blurbs on the dust jacket, this is not a book about Luther or the Reformation; notwithstanding its prestigious publishing house, this is not a scholarly book; and notwithstanding its selection by the History Book Club, the author is not interested in history. Though Richard Marius chose a title reminiscent of this reviewer's Luther: Man Between God and the Devil (Yale University Press, 1989), it is fair to note that there is hardly a book or article from this reviewer's pen ...
