JIM WRIGHT, DEFENDANT
LAST WEEKEND, defending himself against the charge that an employee had pieced together his boss's book on public time, Congressman Jim Wright waged an artful defense, which no doubt he will take to the races if and when a truly serious investigation gets done.
What Wright said, in effect, was: Everybody Does It. Now under the law, as we know, that is not an emancipating excuse. But what Mr. Wright has primarily to fear is public opprobrium, and if he can convince the public at large that indeed that is pretty much the way Congress works, they will not hold the book against him.
