With one notable exception, the slogan for the AFC East is "The Future Was Then."
For the last five years of the 20th century, the East was certainly the strongest conference in the AFC, and probably the toughest in the NFL. In every season since 1995, the East has provided at least two and as many as four of the AFC's six playoff teams.
No longer. What's most noticeable about the division this year is how many of its most celebrated names are elsewhere. Four of the five teams are minus at least one future Hall of Famer.
