Nearly a fifth of American adults believe they are allergic to a specific food. But experts estimate that, in fact, only about 1 to 2 percent of us have real, honest-to-goodness food allergies. Most folks who think they have a food allergy really have a food intolerance. What's causing all the confusion?
It's all in how your body handles the offending food. If you eat a specific food, like strawberries, and you develop upset stomach, intestinal cramps and a killer case of gas, you might suspect that you're plagued with a food allergy. But it's more likely that you're suffering from food intolerance.
